This certifying agency for marine biology courses within the framework of recreational diving plans to break the world record in the number of divers who, together, will raise awareness about marine research on June 10, International Day of the Oceans.
On June 10, 2023, the Spanish coast will become the scene of an unprecedented event in the field of recreational diving. The Conciencia Diving Academy -startup promoted by Incubazul, in the Cádiz Free Zone- has summoned the diving centers of Spain and Portugal to carry out an initiative that commemorates the International Day of the Oceans and in which it is expected to beat a world record for collaboration in marine research by divers.
Buceo Conciencia, a marine conservation academy and organizing company, has convened this event in order to join in this joint effort to find out the state of vulnerable fish populations in the Mediterranean-Atlantic area. To date, the start-up company has summoned more than 50 diving centers along the entire Spanish coast, including a large part of the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.
Thus, the academy wants to break its own record and is calling on divers to dive into the sea in search of vulnerable fish species and then report them on the Observers del Mar platform. An online platform of the CSIC (Consejo Superior for Scientific Research) designed so that citizens can contribute to marine research.
This unique event will not only be an opportunity for divers to contribute to marine research, but also to demonstrate their commitment to the conservation of marine ecosystems. The organizers hope that this event, unprecedented in Spain, will have a significant impact on public awareness of the importance of the oceans and the need to protect them.
Maibe Hermoso, founder of Buceo Conciencia, already organized a similar experience in Chile in 2018. “During my PhD I needed data on a new species of shrimp. I summoned all the divers in the country to go look for him, each one from his place of residence, but on the same day. We managed to involve more than 300 divers and cover more than 4000 km of coastline. In addition, we found the shrimp in areas where we did not know that it arrived. It was all a success".
“We are excited to lead this historic effort in the recreational diving industry.”, has indicated Maibe Hermoso. “Our objective is that it is understood that divers are the eyes of the ocean and therefore key actors for marine conservation. We hope this epic event will draw public attention and motivate more people to get involved in protecting our oceans.”, pointed out the promoter of this diving agency, who ended by encouraging them to join "if you are a diver, we invite you to join this historic initiative and help us break a world record on International Oceans Day".
The Free Trade Zone of Cádiz implements with Incubazul a blue economy benchmark project throughout Spain and in which circumstances are fostered to attract and promote talent and ideas with the oceans and seas as the main focus.
This High Technology Incubator Project for the promotion of innovation and technology transfer to microSMEs in the blue economy sector in Andalusia “[BlueEcoIncuba x Logistical]Tech = ZONA BASE – INCUBAZUL 2.0” is 80% financed by the European Regional Development Fund within the Pluriregional Operational Program of Spain FEDER 2014-2020 OP. “A way of making Europe” within axis 3: Improving the Competitiveness of SMEs, Thematic Objective 3 Improving the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises, and investment priority 3 Promotion of entrepreneurship, in particular, facilitating the economic exploitation of new ideas, and promoting the creation of new companies, also through incubators.”
